The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government to support the decision of the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) to allow post-graduate doctors to perform surgeries in certain branches of Ayurveda. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the CCIM’s decision, which was heard before a bench of Chief Justice Sharad Bobade on Monday.
The petition seeks postponement or revocation of CCIM’s decision on surgical rights granted to postgraduate practitioners in Ayurveda and declaration that they do not have the authority to make such decisions. According to the notification issued by CCIM, professionals pursuing post-graduate qualifications in a particular branch of Ayurveda will be able to perform 39 types of general as well as 19 surgeries like ear-nose-throat and eye. For this, amendments have been made in the relevant Acts.
