Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost the Nandigram constituency in the Assembly elections. He was defeated by Suvendu Adhikari, who left the Trinamool Congress and became a BJP supporter. But Mamata’s party won a majority in the election and became the chief minister for the third time. After this, there was a heated political debate over which constituency Mamata Banerjee would contest from. Mamata has finally decided on this. Bhawanipur is Mamata Banerjee’s traditional assembly constituency (bhabanipur assembly seat). She was always contesting elections from here. But this time, Suvendu contested from Nandigram to challenge his rights and was defeated. Now Mamata Banerjee has decided to contest from Bhawanipur constituency. Trinamool Congress MLA Shobhandev Chattopadhyay, who won from Bhawanipur constituency, tendered his resignation to Bangla Vidhasabha Speaker this afternoon. This has paved the way for Mamata Banerjee to contest from Bhawanipur.
Chattopadhyay tendered his resignation to Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay. Mamata Banerjee will contest from Bhawanipur constituency in the next six months, Chattopadhyay said after her resignation. But Chattopadhyay is the agriculture minister and has not resigned. He remains the Minister of Agriculture. It is said that he will contest from another constituency to return to the Assembly.
