Thangkhu was killed in an encounter with police

A team of Meghalaya police had arrived at the Kinton Masar residence in Thangkhu’s Mawlai area to conduct a raid in the IED blast case. Meanwhile, news came that Thangkhu had been encountered. According to police, Thangkhu tried to stab a team of four policemen during the raid. This forced the police to open fire. Thangkhu was killed in the shooting.

According to police, Thangkhu was taken to a nearby hospital after the shooting, but was pronounced dead at the scene. Two of his accomplices have been detained for questioning. Police also seized a 9mm gun, a knife, a laptop and several mobile phones. However, Thangkhu is alleged to have been killed. That is why there is tension in the state. HNLC accepts responsibility for Shillong blast

The National High Liberation Council (HNLC) claimed responsibility for the blast in Shillong. Two people were seriously injured in the blast. In another incident last month, an IED exploded at a police barracks in Khilheriat. One policeman was injured. The building was also damaged. Three people were arrested in connection with the blast. Two of them had said that Thangkhu was the mastermind of the blasts.

The Hinitrap Achik Liberation Council (HALC), known as the first extremist tribal organization in Meghalaya, split into the Heinitrap National Liberation Council. Thangkhu was closely associated with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, a Naxalite organization in Nagaland, as well as the National Liberation Front of Tripura in Tripura.

The extremist organization Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council claims to be fighting for the Khasi Jaintia tribes. The organization claims to be fighting against people entering Meghalaya from other states. This organization was established in 1987. Cherisherfield Thangkhu was one of the founding members of this organization. At one time, the group’s president, Julius Dorfang, commander-in-chief Bobby Marvin, and Cheristerfield Thangkhu were considered extremely dangerous Naxalites. However, Dorfang surrendered on July 24, 2007 and Thangkhu on October 18, 2018.
The role of mediator between the Thangkhu government and the extremists

According to Hinewittrap National Liberation Council Secretary-General Sinecooper Nongtra, Thangkhu was acting as a mediator in trying to bring about a dialogue between the central government and the banned organization. All the messages sent to IB and SB had gone through Thangkhu, the Hindustan Times quoted Nongtra as saying.
Home Minister resigns

Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has abruptly resigned after an encounter with one-time terrorist Cheristerfield Thangkhu in Meghalaya. Rimbui has asked Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to conduct a judicial inquiry into the matter. He hopes that an independent and impartial inquiry into the death of Cherishstarfield will be easier and that the truth will come out. His party, the United Democratic Party, has also backed his resignation. Rimbui also said that he took this decision only after discussions with the party. According to government sources, the government has accepted the resignation of the Home Minister.
Curfew and internet ban

Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad Sangma’s residence was attacked with a petrol bomb on Sunday night. However, due to the vigilance of the security forces, no casualties or financial losses were reported in the incident.
The state government imposed a curfew in Shillong on Independence Day after vandalism and arson in and around the state capital. The curfew will continue till 5.00 am on August 17. Mobile internet services have been banned in almost four districts of the state.
