In the list of clean cities, Indore was followed by Surat in Gujarat and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.
Indore, known as the ‘industrial capital’ of Madhya Pradesh, generates 1,200 tonnes of waste per day, according to official data. However, the administrative authorities were successful in maintaining cleanliness in the city. For the fifth year in a row, Indore has been hailed as the ‘cleanest city in the country’. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan lauded District Collector Manish Singh and other officials for this.
Why is Indore the cleanest city?
The city of Indore has been honored as the ‘Cleanest City’ since 2017 under the Consecutive Sanitation Campaign. This year, Indore was honored as the best city in ‘Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge’. Through this, along with the cleanliness of the city, employment is also provided to the citizens.
– About 11 thousand 634 cleaning friends took help for cleaning the city
– It is learned that Indore earns Rs. 20 crore annually from waste management.
– Indore is known as a dust free city. Here the water of rivers and streams is cleaned and reused.
– The 1,200 tons of waste generated in the city includes about 700 tons of wet waste. Revenue is also generated from waste management using fertilizer and biomethanization plants.
– Rs 343 crore was spent for cleaning 137 km of rivers and streams in the city
– 450 tons of dry waste is generated in the city, Indore Municipal Corporation gets Rs. 2 crore from the companies processing it.

– In March 2021, Indore was ranked first in the country’s ‘Municipal Performance Index’. Also, it was ranked ninth in the Ease of Living Index.
Maharashtra fell behind in ‘cleanliness’
Disappointingly, this year, Maharashtra is not in the top three in the list of cleanest cities in the country. Last year, Navi Mumbai was the third cleanest city in the country. However, for five years in a row, Navi Mumbai has managed to maintain its book as the cleanest city in Maharashtra.
