New Delhi: Ahead of the Assembly elections in West Bengal, party president Sonia Gandhi convened a meeting of party leaders on Saturday. At a time when other parties are preparing for the Assembly elections, the Congress is in the throes of electing a new president. It is understood that the meeting convened by Sonia will discuss the election of a new president. The meeting will be attended by senior party leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Friday said that Rahul Gandhi is the strongest contender for the presidency. Surjewala said that 99.9 per cent of the party workers want Rahul Gandhi to be elected as the president.

Surjewala also clarified in a press conference that the process of selection of party president will start soon. The Electoral College of Congress, members of the All India Congress Committee, Congress workers and members will select the right person as the party president. “I want 99.9 per cent people in the party, including me, to elect Rahul Gandhi as the party president,” Surjewala said.

In the coming years, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Tamil Nadu will have Assembly seats. Before that, the Congress will have to find answers to questions within the party. For this, the current Congress president Sonia Gadhi has called the party leaders for a meeting at her residence on Saturday.

The ‘disgruntled’ leaders of the party who wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi expressing their displeasure were also urged to attend the meeting. According to sources, five to six of the 23 leaders who wrote the letter are likely to attend the meeting.

Recently, senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath had met Sonia Gandhi. He had expressed his desire to meet the senior leaders of the party and try to allay their grievances.
